21st century: big, cheap, bland

As the 21st century got underway, hard drives grew still bigger and cheaper, but also grew to look and behave and sound very much the same as one another. The endless variety of the 1980s and the 1990s gave way to the relentless logic of engineering.

Just as modern aircraft and modern cars all look much the same because there really is one best shape for any particular job, so too with modern hard drives.
